Sergeant Sutton

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present. He probably served prior to the war in a regular regiment of the cavalry.

Sutton enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 1908 and November 1914 – probably in the first months of the war.

In December 1914 he embarked with D Squadron for England, where they camped at Cople, near Bedford, awaiting orders for France.

Sutton, however, was not with the squadron when it left for France. It is probable that he fell ill or was injured and returned to Ireland, either serving out the war at the regiment's reserve depot at Antrim, or being discharged as no longer physically fit for service.
